5/31/17

I came to realization that it is not the end of the world if you don't get the highest grades. Life is too short to be stress out why not enjoy high school. High school finna sucks I've known that from freshman year. A lot people would say it sucks because you have to be involved more with the school, but sports is involvement with the school. Why not take the classes you want to take and not have anyone nagging on you that you have to take these certain classes. There are other options and cheaper ways to get to a university.  Do what you want to do. That's what I learned from the three years I've been in high school. Better late than never.

5/19/17

Today in the Master Academy we discussed death and what are the real effects of death. Personally, I was overwhelmed with the topic because it was real shiz. People would say that physically injuries such as murders, heart attacks, strokes, and car accidents cause death. Don't you ever think that there are other possibilities like psylogically wise. Sucides yes. Bullying yes. Until today when Lily mentioned something that totally caught my attention. A possible way could be by broken heart syndrome and it has been PROVEN. I was like what the heck. That seems unreal right? There was this couple that Lily that mentioned in her presentation and the wife died because of a stroke and TEN HOURS LATER the husband died due to heartbroken syndrome. He couldn't live without her. Now, lets all take a moment to think about the people we love and keep them close to us and make time for them. Death is one hella of a motherfinna.
What is your definition of success and what are steps/requirements are there in order to achieve your success definition ?

Literature Analysis

Book: Vampire Kisses book 1

Summary: It was about a girl named Raven and she was obsessed with vampires and everything black. By her house was a haunted mansion and one day her and her best friend went inside that mansion because she thought no one lived there. Little did she know that there was a strange family living there who had barely moved in. Unfortunately they didn't meet until later on in the book.  Raven was in high school and she described herself as an outsider, but she didn't care.

Theme: Be who are and don't care what people think

Author: I think the author would be a night person because the book is pretty much based at night. I could picture the author staying up all night drinking coffee on the couch and having candles lit in their house. The author probably eats out a lot like at hamburger joints and diners because in the book the two main characters go to a lot of diners at night. I don't think the author would exercise because the main character isn't that type of athletic person.

Literary Techniques? : There was a lot similes because Raven would compare the color black to a bright color. She would say The night was as blacker as my skirt. There was personification which was Raven describing how the mansion gave her light and it was bright to her world. Metaphors like he was like my partner in crime.

We Eat Social Media For Breakfast

Social Media is a huge hit in this generation. The author creates a audience that connects to all ages. I think the diction is very powerful because in the article it talks about memories and that's what life is made out of. Of course, all people are going to relate to memories. It is about sharing memories with people who were there and not there.

The author uses diction by referring back to when he was a kid. He talks about this certain memory about films. He remembers going to a store, and excited about getting a film developed. That was the thing to do and once that film was developed you got to share those pictures  and trying to figure out what holiday that was. Then he refers back to how this generation truly is because most teenagers have iPhones or Galaxys and being able to have the date on the picture already there for them. They do not need to go to a store to get that picture developed it is already in the cloud. In this generation we tend to post our memories onto social media whether it be a cool quote picture or of a family event. We post onto any social media platform and people who knows us sees it and people who may not know us sees it also. Sometimes it is all just for attention and bragging privileges. He uses syntax by stating that it is not the same if we post that memory onto social media because sometimes you just only want to share that memory with one individual instead of the whole world.

The tone in this article is informing and personal. It is informing because he describes how technology changes over time and discusses the origin of the word. Apparently, each generation seems to have a different or change slightly in technology compared to the generation below them. He has some humor by using the term narcissistic sharer as a person that who shares legit everything about them. Whether it be what time they woke up to their current relationship arguments. In a sense social media defines us because it is basically our life through images. By having social media in this generation we have more opportunities to meet new people; whether it be a opportunity for something or just making new friends. This article clearly uses diction and syntax by trying to reach to an audience for all ages, which it did.

Ignite Talk

My big question is that how do people know you are going to be successful in life or is that just what people say. The one thing i did over break was to compare an athlete that is sponsored by under armor and compared it to a athlete in high school. There were a lot of things in common. My question is based on academics and sports. The connection i saw in this course with my big question is the ending of Fahrenheit 451 because it was about how Montag escaped the real world and found his own world and people. i see that as being successful because that means a lot to him about how he escaped the real world and is more at peace. My next move is to do more depth detail in the pyramid of success and ask people what does that mean to them like is it really success. I dont know but its a an idea.
Prompt: Explain the nature and importance of two or three means by which you keep track of time and discuss how these means reveal your person.

Time

Time is a measurement and is measured by using a system. You only have twenty four hours in one day. So thats 1440 precious minutes in one day. Students use seven of the 24 hours for school and 4 hours for extra-curricular activities in all. Adults that work use usually eight hours for work and 3 hours for any errands to do. We all sleep so there goes eight hours of sleep well the recomanded sleep hours. Students are left with a total of nine hours, but it does not seem like it. Adults that work are left with thirteen hours to do whatever they want. Its your choice on what you do with those hours. Time management makes you grow as a person and reveals who you are.

There is no such thing as a perfect student or perfect adult. Most of us get stress because there is so much we have to do, but with little time to do it in. Surprisingly, time management is not taught in school. You have to learn on your own and figure it all out. If you do not have time management, it clearly states what kind of person you are. Whether you are a hard working, good grade achieving, ambitious person or a person who rather do fun things instead of putting in work. They live off of that Y.O.L.O acronym.

There is no formula for time management well there could be, but everyone is different. I go to school for seven hours, then go to the library after school to work on homework and then two hours later i had over to practice. Practice is usually two hours and possibly fifteen minutes. After practice I go home and talk to my family and eat. Then I do homework and go to sleep. My time management is the life of a student athlete. There is not much of our day left. This reveals me as a busy, but tries to be social person. I have other hobbies i like to do but there is so much more that i do. Time management only reveals that either you are a hardworking person or a person that says "oh i can do that tomorrow instead". I think time management is a key thing to have in your life.

Living Life

"The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe." This quote was quoted from H.L. Mencken. H.L. Mencken was a American essayist and social critic. This quote simply means that he didn't "live life to the fullest". He said this quote back in the 19th century.

However , this society is very divided and everyone seems to be different and does their own thing. Most people are outgoing and enjoy taking life risks. They enjoy experiencing new things and getting out of their comfort zone. On the other hand, there are some people that enjoy being in their safe circle and doing the same things over and over every single day. People enjoy it because they have simpler days and feels less stress out when nothing changes. When you are in difficult or foreign situations you actually benefit from those types of situations. You grow as a person by learning life lessons.

Although you can learn life lessons by watching someone else making mistakes. It is not the same thing, but it has the same main idea. However, everyone makes mistakes, there is no such thing as a perfect person. If you know someone please let me know because I do not believe in a perfect person. I would side with H.L. Mencken. I think many people prefer to be safe and to follow rules and have a good life.

We Grow

Reading helps the mind grow and be open to new ideas. When we were in elementary school the best books to read were "Diary of Wimpy Kid", "Magic Tree House", and "Captain Underpants". If you had those books in ELA class you were considered one of the coolest kids. In Junior high the only reading we had to do was during SSR and in English class.

As we grow up, we understand concepts clearer and see things differently as we reread books. Dr. Preston uses diction of describing that we read high level books in school when we are younger and we do not completely catch the main point of the book. We often over look small details that make a huge impact in the book. Dr. Preston uses syntax by stating that in school we are taught that there is only one meaning in the book. In the real world that's totally wrong there is a lot of meanings in books. Pathos appears in Dr. Preston's essay by creating a old emotion when he explained about his first time reading Hamlet. He made a comparison from reading it just for the grade compared to reading it later on in life. Dr. Preston uses logos by stating that he got blown away by reading Fahrenheit 451 when he was not forced to read it. He got so much material out of books by reading for fun instead for a grade.

Dr. Preston does not only connect to a certain group of people but he connects with everyone by connecting with experiences. Reading is described as a completely different world. You can feel basically everything the character feels. He uses a metaphor by describing that he could smell the kerosene while reading Fahrenheit 451. It is crazy how you get so into the reading world you kind of lose sight of the real world. Many people hate books because in school we are in searching for one answer, but there is so much more books offer us.

In all, Dr. Preston made me think differently of how books are. Whether it be just for the grade or just for fun. We should all consider reading books for the heck of it. It is like watching a movie twice just to see if we missed something the first time we watched it. Why can't we do the same for books? I look forward to reading Fahrenheit 451 when I am 30 years old. Maybe I will gain a different understanding of the book.

Fahrenheit 451 Questions 1-15

1)   Why does Ray Bradbury start the novel in this way? Why might it be more pleasurable to burn books rather than read them?

Ray Bradbury starts the novel with this line because the main character in the book starts off with burning books and Montag was trying to keep society safe by burning them. It was more pleasurable to burn the books than read them because in the book books are somewhat danger to society and Montag's job is to save people in society.

2) In the opening scene, why are the books compared to birds?

I think books are getting compared to birds because books are a nonliving thing and he's comparing it to something that is a living thing.

3) Discuss the difference between Montag and Clarisse’s lives.
Clarisse's life isn't explained much in the beginning of the book. She has a different point of view of life compared to Montag. She's more carefree and "crazy". She doesn't care what everyone thinks of her. On the other hand, Montag isn't carefree, he worries too much. Montag's relationship with his wife is really sad. Its kind of depressing honestly. Montag tries to give his wife everything but to him all she wants is more and more. He doesn't go with the flow. All he does is go to work and come home and watches over his wife. He isn't living life, he is draining his life.

4) Montag’s television includes headphones called “seashells.”  The “wall to wall circuit” allows Mildred to enter the “play” and, therefore, the television programming. How does the technology within the novel compare to our current technology? In the first pages of the novel, does technology improve the quality of life for Montag and his wife, Mildred? Why or why not?

The technology in the novel isn't that great. The technology in the novel were only radios, cameras, televisions with black and white screenings. Today's technology is extradinary because we have smartphones, laptops, apps, televisions with colored screenings.
Unfortunately, technology was bad for Montag's marriage. Mildred wouldn't listen to Montag because all of her attention would be on technology. It wasn't healthy.

5) Why does the narrator introduce us to Montag at this time of his life, when he encounters Clarisse and confronts Mildred’s overdose?

Montag is introduced at this time of his life when he encountered Clarisee because he was dreading life. If he was a color he would be black and Clarisse is yellow. Just by meeting Clarisee, Montag has realized that life can be more and different for him.

6) Why does the author introduce the character of Clarisse before Mildred?

I think the author introduced Clarisse first because the author was trying to make the reader think. The author wanted to make the reader want to read more by trying to figure out the main character's background.

7) Why are all the houses fireproof in this society?

All houses are fireproof in this society because only the inside burns immediately and the outside of the house crashes down a couple of days later.

8) Why does Mildred require emergency service? What service is provided?

Mildred requires emergency service because of the time she overdosed. She felt like that was a close one because she wasn't breathing and Montag had barely found her. She was close to being dead. So she got technicians to watch over her.

9) What is the mechanical hound and what is its purpose?

The mechanical hound is a mechanical dog. The mechanical hound's job is to kill criminals who violated one of the laws of society.

10)  Why does the society consider Clarisse “anti-social”?

Society sees Clarisse as "anti-social" because she is carefree and crazy. Society sees that as a threat and dangerous.

11)  When the woman’s house is raided, why does she light the match?

The woman lights the match because she rather burn with her books. Instead of watching them burn. She couldn't see a clear picture of life without her books.

12)  Describe the relationship between Montag and Mildred

The relationship between Montag and Mildred is sad. They are a married couple, but they cannot remember the first time they met. That's sad especially when they have been together for ten years. Mildred has a pill problem, but doesn't realize it. Montag has to keep an eye on her because she almost died because she overdosed. They are a depressing couple and I think Montag deserves better.

13) What is the purpose of Beatty's visit?

The purpose of Beatty's visit is because Montag wanted to call in sick for work. I think Beatty didn't believe him so Beatty wanted to see if he was truly and honestly sick.

14)  Reread Captain Beatty’s monologue (pp.57-59). Discuss his view that school cultivates anti-intellectual sentiment (p.58). In your opinion does it accurately depict your high school? Do books violate the idea that ”everyone is made equal” (p.58)?

Beatty discusses school has been more demanding and controlling. School teaches students other knowledge that should be irrevalant for everyday life. School doesn't stuff the students' minds with facts so they can finally think on their own. I think this accurately depicts my high school. I feel like a robot every time I step onto campus. School doesn't teach us about how life is going to be like teach us how to have good credit and how to cook. Instead of teaching us things we wont ever use in our lives. School should be more than that. It should be more than focusing on getting good grades.

15) Why does Montag feel “fat”?

Montag feels fat because he feels guilty and ashamed. He is feeling the weight of the world slowly come onto his shoulders because he is hiding books!
College Fair Experience

It was a great experience to explore and talk to people from different colleges. I got a lot of informational pamphlets from most of the colleges there. The colleges that stood out to me were University of Florida, Colorado State, University of Hawaii, and Fresno State. They all seem like great colleges to go to.

Motivational Quote of the Day

believe
CAN WE WATCH THE MOVIE???

Okay first of all, the book is way better than the movie. The book includes specific details and important events that the movie doesn't most likely include. I think watching the movie and reading the book before gives us things to compare and contrast. Its a great way to remember the book because its like we read it twice or watched the movie twice.

GATSBY CHAPTER 3 REMIX

So far in this book I think chapter 3 is my favorite because it talks about real stuff that happens in life. It explains that not everyone can be happy. I love how the author use descriptive words to describe how Gatsby was feeling about his inner self. sometimes in life its not all color and rainbows. You just have to rip the band aid to move on to greater things instead of covering it up. If that makes sense.

REMIX

I would remix this chapter to "The Perks of being a Wallflower" because Charlie deals with his loneliness and his inner dark self. He feels that he doesn't quite fit in the normal teenager phase. He's more formal, quiet, and independent. There's this girl named Sam and Charlie likes Sam but he doesn't believe he could possibly be in love with her. As similar to Gatsby's feelings towards a woman whose name is Jordan Baker. Gatsby doesn't quite think he could ever "find the right woman" or to fall in love. He seems to isolate himself from his glorious life with rich friends and turnt parties with sad drunk souls wandering looking for their soul mate  to bring them back into life and to feel whole again. He doesn't want to believe that he could possibly fall in love. A quote from Gatsby would be "And from a moment I thought I loved her." As for Charlie he thinks that he couldn't fall in love with a wild soul like Sam. I think Sam becomes with Charlie because so Charlie can finally live life out of this comfort zone. Sam tries to get Charlie out of trying to isolate himself and tries to get him out of his darkness.

CONCLUSION

I quite don't know if this fits in what remix really is. I think Charlie and Gatsby are very similar. I recommend watching "The Perks of being a Wallflower" its a great film.

MUSIC AS LITERATURE

I think we can definitely consider music as literature because basically music creates a image for the listener. While literature creates a vivid image to the reader. Its the same thing. Music is like poetry when you think about it because music can be descriptive. The difference between a novel and a song is that a novel has more descriptive details. While a song is a short poem or passage that has a chorus. A novel describes a character that goes through obstacles or the novel has some type of action. While some songs don't require words and the song could be just instrumental only. A song speaks to the listener in a way and creates a message. A novel has the same concept except you are reading the words and the novel provides a lesson to learn from. Words are powerful and I think music and literature are the same thing.

Hello 2017!

2016 was definitely a huge roller coaster for me and made me grow as a better person. When it was the beginning of the 2016 year I depended on people instead of being more independent. I became more independent as the year was coming to a end. I look forward to continuing on becoming a better person, think more clearer, and to change my perspectives on situations if that makes sense.
